Methods of removing paint from metal surfaces

When it comes to removing paint from metal surfaces, the good news is that there are multiple ways to complete the task - all of which require  different levels of elbow grease, so you can customize your process based on the item you’re changing. Let’s take a look at a few of the tried-and-true methods that can help you along with your project.

Using baking soda or vinegar, and hot water

Our first industry secret is both environmentally friendly and incredibly simple. In fact, it’s so simple that you may not even have to run to the store, as most of these items can be found in your pantry! All you will need is boiling water, ¼ cup of vinegar or baking soda, and a disposable tin to house the item being stripped of paint. The vinegar and baking soda should be combined in water and brought to a boil and then applied to the desired object needing paint removal.

Allow the item to soak in the solution for at least 15 minutes and the paint should separate with ease. While this method requires minimal effort and is budget friendly, it can only be utilized on smaller pieces of metal that can be fully submerged, so no garage doors! Don't worry: we have more solutions for your larger items!

Paint stripper

Out of all of our options, this one is by far the most expected. Yes, of course they have paint strippers to simplify the process and make paint removing easier for your larger projects. While this method is pretty straight forward, you are utilizing strong chemicals and will need to obtain additional tools, like a disposable paintbrush, to accomplish the process.

With a paint stripper, you will simply apply the pre-made solution to the item you are renovating using a brush. This method takes time as the solution needs to marinate for a minimum of 30 minutes - if not a few hours. After the solution has sat, it can be wiped off using a rag or a scraper. This method is best used for large projects (like a garage door), projects covered in spray paint, projects with a coat of latex paint, or projects with hard-to-reach areas.

Paint scraper

If you happen to have a paint scraper handy, the good news is that you may be able to use just that in the paint removal process. Sure, this method is a little more labor intensive, but it still gets the job done! This method is especially cost effective and simple on items where the paint is already lifting from its metal surface. Just make sure you have the appropriate scraper for the type of metal you’re working on to avoid any potential damage.

Angle grinder

Okay – so you want to remove the paint with basically no wait time and no effort?  We understand. You can accomplish this using an angle grinder with a strip disk! While this method may be a little dusty and noisy, it certainly is quick and efficient when getting the job done.

Heat gun

On the more uncommon side of the spectrum, a heat gun can be used to strip difficult projects of their paint. This tool is utilized when chemicals are out of the equation and assistance is needed in removing stubborn acrylic paint. The heat gun easily melts away paint from the metal surface - you just need to make sure that the metal in question doesn't overheat during the process.

Other great tips for removing paint

While various methods may be at your disposal for paint removal, there are some things to keep in mind when getting the job done.

Tools you may need to properly remove paint

During the paint removal process various tools may be needed to accomplish the task at hand. Determining what tools will be needed for the job strictly depends on which method you’re using. Outside of the job-specific tools, it is always important to consider having a paint scraper and gloves at the ready.

Safety tips to keep in mind

Safety should always be your top priority – we know it’s ours. When using potentially harmful tools such as a drill grinder or heat gun, it is critical to think of the ways you need to protect yourself. Heat resistant gloves, eye protection, and, in some cases, a respirator or mask can ensure the best experience for your painting project.
